Spring Chicken Run

Date: Category: Elsewhere

We at Ideafuel plucked up the courage to attend the Spring Chicken Run last Sunday, and although we ran around the course like headless chickens in the pouring rain, we still had enough fuel in us to pose for the camera at the finish line.

Fishing with with boys

Fishing with the boys

Time spent with my two boys is very special to me. When I was a boy my dad always took me fishing and I always remember those times very fondly. And now I want Oli and Fin, my boys, to have the same. They get very excited when they know we’re planning another fishing trip - Fin the youngest always wants to catch a shark and no matter how many times I explain they don't live in ponds, he still keeps his fingers crossed. Oli, his big brother, is getting quite the fisherman - landing quite large fish. The look on his face when the float disappears is just amazing and he always squeals the same thing HERE WE GO! Fab. A bit of good, old-fashioned fun - just Dad and sons. I just love it.

They grow up way to quickly, I don’t want to miss it!

How to look after Chickens (It’s a piece of cake - just get the wife to do it)

Freddy the henFin with Ninja

Keeping chickens is a very simple thing to do and very rewarding, I have two chickens - Ninja and Freddy (the daft names aren’t compulsory but that’s what you get when you let your two boys come up with the names).

Feeding time is also really easy. They eat chicken pellets, corn and every so often grit mixed in to help the girls create the shell. We have fresh eggs every day and the boys run to the chicken house to collect the still-warm eggs in the morning and then have them for breakfast, how cool is that! They also make great pets: they run around the garden together, sit on your knee to be stroked and love lots of attention. They are incredibly curious creatures and constantly follow you around the garden in the hope you might cast them a worm. They even try to sneak in to the house if everyone is inside to make sure they’re not missing anything.

Digging the veg patch over does take a little longer than it would normally as they are always around your feed looking for grubs and big fat worms, but its great fun and would recommend it to anybody.

We love books

Stack of reading matter

I love a bit of reading matter. Not only that, but I love books, bookshops and the whole process of buying books. Imagine my joy as the new John Banville novel, River Cottage cookbook and Monty Don’s Ivington Diaries started appearing in the bookshops. (Santa, take note.) But how much has the way we buy books changed?

The experience of pottering around a bookshop, being seduced by the jacket design, or intriguing titles on offer is rare, particularly on the average high street. Books are piled high and discounted or available through online stores which remove the tactile experience of selecting a book (although the joy of ripping the package open when it arrives is akin to Christmas, and the convenience is undeniable). I read the Guardian’s article on high street book selling and I longed for the tiny little book shop in my home town, The Book Castle.
